Foreword
62% of the value of the world’s quoted companies is now intangible ( Source: Brand Finance GIT ™ December 2006 ) and the value of intangibles of the Standard and Poors 500 has trebled over the last 30 years ( Source: Millward Brown Optimor 2006 ).
The factors and processes which generate this intangible value are of commercial significance and shareholders are placing increasing emphasis on a management’s ability to manage intangible assets, in the understanding that a growing proportion of companies’ value will derive from them.
Intangiblereporting.com is a new initiative aimed at providing information and furthering the debate around definitions of intangibles and intangible reporting. Created by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising ( IPA ), the member organisation for over 260 advertising, media and marketing communications agencies, it seeks to provide a portal, not only to the IPA’s own work in this area, but to published reports by other interested parties.
The debate is ongoing. We invite you to read about it, comment on it and get involved.
Why Register?
In 2006 the IPA began an extensive review of the available literature on intangible reporting. Using this knowledge they conducted a large-scale series of original interviews, seeking to provide an overview of current knowledge and thinking about intangibles, and intangible reporting. The result was the well-received publication, The Development of Intangible Reporting, currently into its second edition. This report confirmed the growing importance of intangible assets, and reviewed existing definitions, seeking to “make intangibles tangible”. By registering with Intangible Reporting, you can discover how to access this thought-leading publication.
In December 2006 the IPA partnered with Brand Finance, a global brand valuation consultancy, to launch Global Intangible Tracker ( GIT™ ), a review of the intangible value of listed companies on 25 stock markets around the world. By registering with Intangible Reporting, you can gain access to this global overview.
In 2007 the IPA have sponsored a new award category at the prestigious IR Magazine Awards, the IR Magazine Award for Best Narrative Reporting. In developing the shortlist for this award, the IPA has undertaken a detailed review of all FTSE-350 narrative reports, evaluating them on a comprehensive ten-point framework. By registering you can gain access to the important conclusions of this work.
Additionally, the IPA are closely monitoring the continuing work which the regulator, investor and corporate governance bodies, and accountancy firms have done in this field. By registering you can gain access to our portal which brings together all of these reports in one convenient place.
